Background Information
OSA in Congress
OSA encourages its members and all those in the science community to
become informed about public policy issues and get involved in the
legislative process.
The U.S. Congress shapes policy that directly affects scientists,
including those in the optics and photonics community. Specifically,
policy decisions:
- determine funding levels for research
- increase or decrease support and programs for students
- define what kind of research receives federal support
- help or hinder scientists’ ability to compete domestically and internationally
Legislators rely upon the expressed views of their constituents, the information of experts, and their own opinions to make important decisions. This is where you -- as a scientist or engineer, as well as a citizen -- can make an impact.
In a democracy, change starts with constituents: everyday citizens just like you. We encourage you to get involved in the legislative process – stay informed, contact your legislator and get others involved. You can make a difference in funding levels for research & development and science education.
To keep you up to date with current issues that affect the optics and photonics community, we have provided a variety of resources throughout this section.
