Technical Groups
Lasers Science and Engineering (QE)
This group is involved with the design of all types of lasers including solid state, gas dye,
free-electron, fiber and diode lasers-with powers from terawatts to picowatts. New developments in
laser devices, amplifiers, systems and applications are also included.
Nonlinear Optics (QN)
This group is concerned with the physics on nonlinear optical materials, new materials,
nonlinear processes and devices using nonlinear optics. Nonlinear Optics: involved with the
interaction of high intensity light with matter. Members study nonlinear materials, phenomena,
devices and applications.
Photonic Metamaterials: From Random to Periodic (SW)
This newly formed group provides a forum for considering fundamental and applied aspects of waves
in random and periodic multiply scattering media. The focus on random media encompasses transmission
through, scattering from, and imaging in turbulent and static disordered media. The statistical nature
of wave propagation and its connection to photon diffusion and localization will be of interest.
Partial coherence, coherent backscattering, temporal, spectral and spatial correlation within the
speckle pattern, and random lasing are important concerns. Remote sensing, propagation and active
imaging in the atmosphere and in bodies of water, and scattering from aerosols are of interest, as
is multiple scattering from dilute cold gases. Discussion of the role of diffusing photons and of
residual optical coherence in medical and biological tissues will be fostered. Plasmonic nanomaterials,
transmission through voids in metallic surfaces, and scattering from metal dielectric surfaces are of
interest. Optical enhancements in metallic and dielectric systems and their applications to photon
guiding and sensing are also important topics. The focus on periodic media includes the discussion
of photonic and plasmonic band gap materials and the control of spontaneous emission and lasing in
such materials. Left-handed materials, QED effects, and light guiding in self-assembled and micro- and
nano-fabricated structures will be considered. Because of the strong parallels between electromagnetic
radiation and other classical, and quantum waves, the group will discuss analogies with the propagation
of acoustic, electronic and matter waves, and dynamical localization and chaos.
Quantum Optics (QO)
This group promotes the diffusion of knowledge about the quantum properties of the
electromagnetic field and atom-photon interactions. Experiment, theory and technology
relevant for atom trapping, Bose condensation, quantum measurements and quantum information are
within the purview of quantum optics.
