Call for Nominations for National Medal of Science

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 - The National Science Foundation (NSF) has opened the call for nominations for the National Medal of Science. Complete nominations must be received via FastLane by December 7, 2007. A complete nomination consists of the nomination itself, along with three references.

The National Medal of Science was established in 1959 as a Presidential Award to be given to individuals "deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, or engineering sciences." In 1980 Congress expanded this recognition to include the social and behavioral sciences. The National Medal of Science is the highest honor the President bestows on scientists. A Committee of 12 scientists and engineers is appointed by the President to evaluate the nominees for the Award. Since its establishment, the National Medal of Science has been awarded to 441 distinguished scientists and engineers whose careers spanned decades of research and development.

For more information on the nomination process, please contact the Program Manager for the National Medal of Science at nms@nsf.gov or 703-292-8040 or visit http://www.nsf.gov/od/nms/medal.jsp.
